DH Richards Memorial Travel Bursaries

DH Richards Memorial Travel Bursaries

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE IUPAC MACRO 2024 CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE

IUPAC Macro 2024 will be held at the University of Warwick in July 2024. Given the prestige of the event and its central UK location, the committee are expecting a greater than normal number of requests to support travel and attendance through the DH Richards travel scheme. We hope to support as many applications as possible for this conference, although this will be dependent on our budget constraints.  As such, the committee will be holding a special application round specifically for attendance for this event.  This will close on 15th April 2024.
Applications will be through the normal DH Richards process with forms sent to the Macro Group Secretary Prof Nick Turner (n.w.turner@sheffield.ac.uk).
Applications to attend other conferences will be considered separately on the normal advertised schedule.

Are you:

A student member of Macro Group (UK)?
Desperate to go to an important conference? Short of all the funding needed?

Then:
The D H Richards Memorial Bursaries scheme can help you!

About the bursaries

Macro Group set up the bursaries as a memorial to D H Richards, who was one of the founding officers of Macro Group and worked hard to establish it as a major group in the UK. Under this scheme, Macro Group sets aside funds each year to support its student members that wish to attend a major conference in the area of polymer science, but are short of funds to make this happen.

Only one student from a particular research group will be granted a bursary for a particular conference. A student can only receive one bursary award during their period of study.

To be eligible to apply, the applicant must be a Macro Group member for at least 1 year, have their supervisor’s support, and be planning to make an oral or poster contribution at the conference. It is expected that part of the funds needed to attend the conference will be obtained from other sources. The maximum bursary amount awarded will be:

  • £100 for a online meeting

  • £300 for a meeting in the UK

  • £500 for a meeting overseas.

As a condition of receiving a bursary award, the student will be required to write a short report on the conference they attended for publication on the Macro Group UK website.

How to Apply

The application and decision-making process has recently changed, so please take careful note of the following information.

Application forms can be obtained by sending an email request to the Macro Group Secretary or downloaded from here.

You should apply at least 4 months in advance of the start date of the conference. This is to ensure that a full round of assessment can occur between application and potential award.

The completed application form must be sent by the applicant’s supervisor (to confirm their support of the application) via email to the Macro Group Secretary in accord with the following four deadlines:

1st March
1st June
1st September
1st December

Decisions will normally be announced less than 4 weeks after the deadline.
